Quick tips for Pinterest beginners

With over 200 MILLION people using Pinterest every month it’s no wonder you want to up your Pinterest game.

Users are there to actively seek helpful, inspiring ideas on the platform and are using Pinterest to plan for important events in their lives. From easy dinner recipes, home renovation tips or even the perfect pair of shoes, you name it they’re searching for it! The most important thing to remember is that Pinterest isn’t a social media platform but rather a visual search engine.

I’m here to tell you - if your business doesn’t have a strong Pinterest presence these days, you’re missing out. More people spend money via Pinterest than ALL other social media channels COMBINED! You know your business needs to be on Pinterest but you are not sure how to get started.

55% of all users shop on Pinterest – this is FOUR times more than other digital platforms!*

Pinterest should definitely be a part of your marketing plan.

So, are YOU using it correctly or even at all? Below are my tried and tested tips on setting up and growing yours/or your clients Pinterest account.

1. SET UP A PINTEREST BUSINESS PROFILE
A perfect profile includes; what you do, how you help people or who you service, a profile photo and relevant keywords. Research what other people in your niche are saying about themselves. What keywords are they using? Do they have a link back to their website? Or a link to their freebie offer?

2. CREATE 10-20 BOARDS RELATED TO YOUR NICHE
Create themed boards that help people identify with what your business is about, what you do, where you are located, what people should know about you, what other things you’re interested in etc..

For eg. are you a home interiors blogger? Create boards with helpful decorating ideas, minimalist design/decluttering ideas, style guides etc. Pinning 25-100 pins to each board initially helps to establish a well-curated profile.

3. YOUR FIRST BOARD SHOULD BE ALL YOUR OWN CONTENT

Name the board "best of (your name here)". Pin all of your content here - blog posts, freebies, infographics etc. Make sure your pin descriptions are full of related keywords and 1-3 hashtags. Again, research what keywords and hashtags other people in your niche are using. Don’t use too many hashtags as this can come across as spammy.

4. EACH BOARD SHOULD HAVE A FULL DESCRIPTION
Write 3-4 sentences about the board, including as many targeted keywords as possible. Having keyword rich board descriptions will lead more eyes to your board. You are allowed to use up to 500 characters so why not use them!

5. OPTIMISE YOUR PINS
Always create vertical pins (use the 2:3 ratio). Use text/headlines that capture the reader's eye and describes what they can expect from the pin.

Consider using a program like Canva, a free/subscription-based graphic design tool, where you can find pre-made Pinterest Pin templates ready for you to drop your own photos and text into. Don’t forget to brand them with your businesses colours and fonts. And, don’t forget to add your website or logo to the pin (usually at the bottom).

Doing a quick search on Pinterest will visually show you which pins stand out more than others and make you want to click on them. Write down what gets your attention from these pins, what draws you to them more than others? Lists & numbers in the headline tend to be a great way to catch attention.

6. USE TAILWIND
Use Tailwind to automate your pins and drive traffic to your site/shop. Scheduling your pins through Tailwind is a huge time saver and will help you pin more consistently. The more consistently you pin the better it is for your analytics. Tailwind will also help you know the best time of the day to pin. Tailwind analytics is also great to let you know which of your pins is performing the best, which boards are performing the best, or how many new followers you’re getting. Crunch the numbers and learn what’s best for your business's growth.

Joining tribes to further optimise your pins strategy is also a huge way to grow your following.

Put these simple steps into action and you’ll be well on your way to a high performing Pinterest account. Of course, there are a lot more in-depth ways that you can increase your profile and traffic but this will give you the jump start you need.
